What an incredible book. Exploring leadership lessons learned from the life journeys of explorer Ernest Shackleton, Abraham Lincoln, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Nai-resisting clergyman Dietrich Bonhoffer and environmental crusader Rachel Carson, Harvard historian Nancy Koehn has created a masterpiece. Forged in Crisis (John Murray, 2017) is beautifully written, filled with fascinating facts and fresh insight into leadership lessons learned through crisis and adversity. Koehn has somehow maintained the historical integrity of the stories while keeping them engaging, succinct and packed full of insights any leader can learn from.
This is a leadership book with a difference. It takes a revealing look at the people addressing some of the greatest challenges of our time. It is bound to make your own challenges pale in significance, and maybe that’s part of the point. The message in this book is clear: with the right combination of determination, wisdom and resilience we can overcome any crisis we face.
It’s not often we describe a business book as a page turner – but this is definitely one of those times!
