This book is a rather unusual choice (Confident Data Skills, Kirill Eremenko, Kogan Page, 2018). The subheading says ‘Master the fundamentals of working with data and supercharge your career’. The implication is that this book is for people in the early stages of their careers. Having read it, we think this book is even more relevant for people who’ve been working for years, without access to data – to tell them (us) how on earth to deal with it! Although a seemingly academic and technical topic, the book reads very well and is filled with real-world examples. It’s a true ‘doing’ book (as opposed to the ‘thinking’ books we often recommend.
Eremenko answers the most basic questions (what is data? Where and how can I get access to it? How can I present it in a useful and compelling way?) without making the reader feel dumb. It’s an evolving science and this book will certainly give non-technical people a big boost in terms of understanding. And if you work with data scientists in your business, it will enable you to ask better-informed questions.
If you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t naturally pick up a book like this. But for anyone who’s not a data scientist, no matter what industry you work in, or where you are in your career, you’ll be smarter for having read this book.
